Protecting your family from the harmful affects of the sun is one of the most important things to do in life. Sunscreen aids in this protection by reflecting, taking in, and/or scattering harmful radiation the sun casts on earth.
Sunscreen can be purchased as several different forms: lotion, spray, gel, cream, and some brands provide it as makeup. Failure to use sunscreen can give unwanted aging of the skin, and even worse – skin cancer.
When buying sunscreen, it is valuable that you read the bottle for what is contained in the bottle. There are some things that might not make sense to everyone; some of them are:
* UVA (Ultraviolet A) – This unseen ultraviolet radiation has a lengthy wavelength that reaches far into layers of the skin. These rays are very harmful because they can be working against the skin without it being felt.
* UVB (Ultraviolet B) – This radiation is a variation of light that the sun radiates. The wavelength of this kind of radiation is simpler than UVA and usually leads to sunburn and other skin problems.
* SPF (Sun Protection Factor) – This term denotes the strength of protection that a given sunscreen provides you after application. A number is written on the jar of sunscreen indicating the strength of it. The higher types provides more protection than the lower numbers. It is mentioned that someone being exposed to the sun use at minimum, SPF 15 to the body periodically and reapply If the sunscreen comes off.
* UVR (Ultraviolet Radiation) – This stuff is real radiation from the sun that can cause premature aging, spots, sunburn, wrinkles, and skin cancer in some. Also, these harmful rays can hurt your immune system.
* Water Resistant – Some sunscreens are good and water resistant in that they stay on the skin longer and are said to withstand water from the pool, ocean, or any other type of water source. Swimmers can go for longer periods of time and still be protected. But, it is very important to reapply sunscreen, even when water resistant, because it looses its effectiveness through longer stays in the water. Water resistant does not mean water proof.
Not only do you have to be informed on the different terms on sunscreen bottles, there are also two different types of sunscreens: physical combatants and chemical blockers. Physical blockers like in the name, physically block hazardous elements of the sun by reflecting UVA and UVB rays back from your body. Chemical blockers on the other hand absorb some of these bad elements; typically the ones with shorter wavelengths.
Whichever type you buy, it is important to be liberal in applying it and be mindful if it is rubbed off. Sunscreens are known to be as effective as you let them – people being exposed to a lot of sun must apply the sunscreen thoroughly and reapply every couple of hours. The sun can be a great and beautiful thing to be with outdoors. But, it can be bad if you do not protect the exposed skin. Learning about what to look for in a sunscreen will keep your skin beautiful and ageless for many years.
