They began providing the Submariner to the Royal Navy, with a few differences: unlike the consumer watches they used welded steel bars instead of spring bars. The watch hands were bolder and wider with a more simple crown.
By the 1970s, Rolex had added their triple-lock crown and changed the crystal to sapphire crystals in the 1980s. The operating depth of the watches was also improved to 330 meters (1000ft).
As the mid 1990s came along, Rolex updated the watch to a 3135 caliber movement. They also began offering a ladies Submariner to capitalize on the emerging popularity of women’s watches. For the 50th anniversary of the Submariner, Rolex introduced a maxi dial version with a green bezel.
