Premature Greying of Hair
Grey hair, gives the indication of improper protein synthesis. The pigment melanin is responsible for the change of hair colours. Early greying of the hair is basically hereditary, and we can inherit it from one of our parents or grandparents. Grey hair can also be influenced by stress. A person experiencing a prolonged period of stress and anxiety may notice, over a period of time, white hairs gradually appearing. Malnutrition, worry, shock, deep sorrow, tension and other similar conditions may also slow down the production of melanin resulting in grey hair.Persons suffering from chronic cold and sinusitis and those who use warm water for washing their hair are more likely to be victims of this condition. A faulty diet and mental worries are the two primary causes of premature greying of hair. Lack of some of the B vitamins, iron, copper, and iodine in the daily diet is said to be a contributory factor. The common factor remains that grey hair has some pigment left in it, but not the amount it had when it was the natural color. Heredity is also a predisposing factor. Other causes of premature greying of hair are an unclean condition of the scalp, drying it with an electric dryer, and use of hair dyes. There are some commercial products out there that claim to be able to rejuvenate the dead pigment-producing cells and reverse grey hair. Such claims, however, are mostly unsubstantiated. The sad truth is that at this point in time no remedy exists that can reverse the greying process. Most of the anti-grey hair products either use Fo-Ti, referring to the centuries old legend of Mr He, who recovered his original hair colour, youthful appearance and vitality thanks to this traditional Chinese medicinal herb, also known as He Shou Wu or use vitamins B (mostly PABA and folic acid) as their main ingredients, since some forms of premature greying are said to be caused by vitamin B deficiency. However, such products are ineffective for the majority of grey hair sufferers.
