So what can we do to have a “Frizz-free” summer?
First let’s take a look at some of the things that contribute to frizziness. Throughout the year, our hair has to deal with abuse from hair dryers and curling irons, as well as chemicals in dye, perms, straighteners and other hair care products. In the summer we add to that sun exposure, salt water at the beach, chlorine in swimming pools, and of course high humidity. Our hair doesn’t have a chance!
While most of us are not willing to give up either the styling, or the activities that damage our hair, there are some simple things we can do to minimize the effects of the added summer stresses.
Sun Exposure
- Solution – wear a hat, or use a hair product with a sunscreen
Salt Water & Chlorine
- Solution – while there are those who would suggest coating the hair with some kind of grease such as cocoa butter, simply rinsing the hair thoroughly after swimming and using a protein shampoo seems like a more feasible solution
While these are very simple and common-sense ideas, they will help to protect your hair from additional damage.
How do we rejuvenate our already-damaged hair and overcome the frizzies?
Simply put, feed your hair. To be healthy, shiny, and frizz-free, hair must have plenty of moisture plus the right balance of protein and natural oil. Our hair is made up of living cells just like the rest of our body, and, just like the rest of our body it needs to be nourished. Hair continually exposed to all the abusive treatment mentioned above has not only had its keratin proteins damaged, but has lost some of its elasticity and ability to retain moisture. It needs a little TLC to bring it back to life!
Fortunately, there are some products available that help to do just that. Some you may have been hearing about recently are Morrocan hair oil products. These products actually contain Argan oil (from Morocco) which is touted as being a powerful source of antioxidants, UV protection, fatty acids, free-radical neutralizers, and vitamins. If this sounds like something you should be eating instead of putting on your hair, it is – it is actually used in cooking in Morocco. This amazing “super food for hair” has been known to restore cellular membrane damage, improve strength, and form a protective barrier against continuing environmental stresses and moisture loss. The result of all this nourishment is the restoration of shine to your hair, a healthier scalp, and mended split ends. No more “frizzies”!
Argan oil has been used by Moroccan women for centuries for its nutritional and cosmetic benefits. Maybe it’s time we learned from them and try this all-natural, chemical-freesolution to undo the damage we’ve done with all the chemical dyes and perms, and the over- exposure to natural harmful elements like salt water and uv rays. It may just help us “beat the frizzies” this summer!
