Do You Have to Have Long Hair to Get a Layered Haircut?

I'm getting my hair cut at a hair salon in a few hours and I was planning on getting a layered haircut. My hair is pretty long but I want to get it cut short (So that I can stick it all up).

Is this possible?
And do the layers last a long time or do they form back into what it was before?

Suggestion:

Layered can be done with short, medium or long hair.

Congrats for having pretty long hair!

I have hair down to my knees, have gone from boy's hair short, permed, dyed, when I was busy experimenting with hair, until I found out my trademark style. I'm happier with the current length, and I'm getting more compliments now than HS, when my hair was blue black and one style. I can create 7 diff. styles a week, and could take less than 5 mins. to do.

Before you decide to cut your hair, make sure you save your hair wrapped in a newspaper. So you'll remember how healthy, and how long it was. Because I can guarantee you, it won't be the same after it's been cut (or permed or dyed). Whatever you decide, continue to do how you were caring for your hair because many people your age have problem growing theirs, for how they style their hair using heating tools.

Find a hairstyle you admire, show them to your hairdresser. Ask her how to style it also. There are other ways, without heating tools, to have beautiful hair.

Depending on the difference in length between layers, they can definitely last. A-line cuts do not last, but traditional layers generally do. Yes, you can do layers with short hair, just be aware of any cowlicks you have so that your stylist doesn't go too short (leads to a spiky top layer).

You can get layers if you cut your hair short. :) Layers are good if you have thin hair; they make it look fuller

The layers will stay depending on how fast your hair grows out. You'll still have the layers, BUT they will just grow longer and longer with the rest of your hair until you cut your hair again.

No, you can definately get it cut with layers with short hair as well. In fact, in my opinion, it's actually better looking than long hair with layers. Layers last as long as your hair keeps growing. Meaning, if you want to get your hair back to the way it was, you have to let your layers catch up to the rest of your hair.

I think layers are cute for shorter hair. I had my hair to my shoulders with a few layers in it. Layers make your hair really thin. Although, I suggest for you to not it get it right at your shoulders, if you still want to be able to put it up because the bottom layer of your hair will fall down.

Layers last a long time in your hair. It takes forever for them to grow out.

I suggest you do get layers though; they're cute with short hair (:
