Suggestion:
You can do an angle cut in the front and a few highlights or low-lights always define and frame your face. You can use thinning shears to not give you the layered look but just give you more volume. Most people use them in the way that leaves a line in your hair but if the scissors are turned over, the line will be underneath and no one will see where they were used in your hair. I also recommend, blow drying with big rollers at the crown and/or the sides of your head. This will help enhance volume. I don't like just straight layers either, they look so choppy. There is a way to do layers that would give you a tapered look from top to bottom but it does take more time to do it this way because the scissors need to be cutting downward instead of horizontally. Have a beautiful day

Maybe you could put some highlights into it, but very subtle ones.
