How Do I Style My Hair?

I have medium length, black hair. I want to style it so that it kinda goes to the side, kinda like this picture:

But I have no idea how to go about doing it. I've tried wax, gel, everything, but it either just makes my hair look greasy or fades out after an hour and my hair is then all over the place again

Suggestion:

Take the picture to the salon, They can cut it that way, layers and crap.
