Growing Long Hair from a Short Hairstyle?

I've always had short hair, and I got a haircut about two weeks ago. I'm going to grow hair now, however, because I listen to metal and I think long hair is awesome.

I was just wondering; my hair is now (because of the haircut) a bit short in the back and sides, yet the top is not as short. (So it's just a typical haircut, really) If I start growing long hair now, will it even out?

Suggestion:

just wait till it grows a bit then get it cut even or another style that is a bit longer so it'l look good while its growing
